• Deer Hunting & Bass Fishing

    Deer Hunting & Bass

You may look at this and say, “This guy is crazy!” Think about this for a moment. We hunt and become the predator. We set up to ambush the deer as they go through their daily routines. We set up on food plots, bedding areas, travel routs—are we not doing the same things when we go bass fishing?

How many people buy topo maps to go hunting? How many look at aerial photographs to find the best places to set up a stand? I do the same things when I go fishing. I study topo maps to find humps, ridges, creek channels, points, flats, and any number of other good spots to set up and fish.

  • Pattern Fishing ABCs

If you’re a tournament angler, by now you’ve probably heard a lot about establishing a pattern when you’re on the water. On any given day, there can be one or more patterns that are going on and the anglers who can identify the most productive pattern can usually be found on top of the leader board at the end of the day.

When you think about multi-day tournaments or even one day events with multiple days of practice, it is important to identify more than one pattern. Why? So you have something to fall back on as conditions change, or as you burn through your fish. Think of it as learning your ABCs… only now it’s pattern “A”, pattern “B” and pattern “C”.

  • The Metabolic Bass

    Metabolic Bass

Looking back on my first days of Bass fishing, I can remember how simple my thought process was... choose a lake, bring my favorite rod, favorite lure and try to catch fish. I never considered; time of year, water temperature, weather changes, oxygen levels, water clarity, water depth, pressure changes, location of bait fish and all the other variables that play an important role in Bass fishing. Today, I can't even fish from the shore without trying to assess all of the many variables which effect the feeding habits of bass. It's an ongoing educational course that we'll never graduate from. Bottom line, the more we know and apply, the more productive we will be on the water.
