LIB Life Member Pat McNamara Passed Away

It is my sad duty to report, that Pat McNamara has passed away on Wednesday August 4th. There will be a memorial service held Sunday August 15th at the Giove Funeral home, (1000 Middle Country Rd., Seldon), from 2:00-4:00.

For those of you who may not know, Pat was a leader and Past President of LIB for many years (1995-1997, 1999-2000), in a time when LIB was filled with great members and leaders, he stood on top. For those of you close to him, he was affectionately called Spike.

I would like to express on behalf of the Long Island Bassmasters, our deepest condolences to Pat’s family.

Thursday, August 12th, our General meeting will be dedicated to Pat. All members past and present are invited to this meeting and encouraged to relate to the rest of us any fund memories they may have.

August President’s Lines

Can’t say what Saturday’s (July31st) night tournament results will be, but as I write these lines, everyone can see that the Angler of the Year race is once again going to come down to our last tournament at White Pond. Jay Stiklickas has the lead in points, but remembering that an angler may only count 8 of the 10 point tournaments, perhaps Mitch Bernstein might have the statistical advantage. Winning two tournaments in a row (Forge, Twin Ponds) certainly propels one up the standings. Mitch is no stranger to putting together consecutive wins; two years back I remember him winning the last two tournaments of 2008.

At our August General meeting, a prospective By-law change will be introduced, it will be up to you, the General membership to deicide by a 2/3 vote if LIB should adopt it, so be at the meeting and have your vote count.

The Board has proposed the following recommendation to the General membership as a possible By-law change:
With regard to Article ll – Membership; Section ll – Requirements for Membership (b) in part, “Chapter dues will be prorated effective September at 60% for the remainder of the year”
The Board suggests Chapter dues will be prorated effective by the June General meeting (second Thursday of the month) at 50% for the remainder of the year.

Ken Dreyer is heading a group to purchase Club hats with the LIB logo stitched on it to celebrate the 40 plus years the Long Island Bassmasters have been in existence. Wow, forty years, I dare say there may be five or six B.A.S.S. clubs around today to make such a claim.

Sponsorships are coming due, and all are welcome to rejoin. The price will remain at $25.00, and be good for one year.

The six man team will be heading up to Owasco Lake August 18th and start pre-fishing for the event to be held on the 21st-22nd. Our team will consist this year of Robin Calitri, Dave Cangro, Dan McGarry, Jay Stiklickas, Chris Weber, and me.

Don’t forget, Robin has graciously offered a half day trip with him on his 23 foot boat. Raffles will be available, so don’t miss out on a very enjoyable day of fishing and laughs.

That’s it for me right now, but let me say once again I appreciate all the members helping out in whatever they can, thank you all, Steve

BASS Conservation

Volunteers gather at a boat launch to release 1,500 bass into Lake Ronkonkoma.

To help spread the word about the New York Federation Nation's Conservation Program, Burnie Haney, BASS Conservation Director for New York, has started an information campaign. Haney believes that it will improve the program and conservation awareness and education.

Haney's initial step in getting representation in each of the nine New York regions was to solicit club volunteers to serve as the eyes and ears for conservation projects.

"For our clubs that are already actively involved with long standing ties to the community and their regional fisheries manager, I've asked them to let me know whenever they work a project so that we can let everyone know what we're doing in New York," he said.

One such event was a recent project that involved BASS Federation Nation (BFN) clubs and the local community. This project consisted of stocking a local lake with bass.

BASS Conservation

The fish were stocked with a 100 percent survival rate.

In an effort to improve Lake Ronkonkoma fisheries, two BFN clubs, the Long Island Bassmasters and the Twin Forks Rod and Reel Club, partnered with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Highline Bass of the Finger Lakes Area and Peter Byrnes to release 1,500 bass into Lake Ronkonkoma. The bass ranged in size from 5.5 to 7 inches and were certified disease free. The BFN's Long Island Bassmasters and Twin Forks Bass Club paid Highline Bass (a commercial company) for the bass that were used to stock the New York lake.

The DEC's Region 1 Fisheries group plans to monitor the growth rates of the stocked bass through periodic electrofishing. The fish were stocked with a 100 percent survival rate.
