Tim began fishing at the age of seven, accompanying his
grand- father to several of North Carolina's premier bass
fisheries of the mid 70's, including Lake Gaston, Phelps
Lake, Lake Wheeler and the Pungo River. Countless days
spent "plugging" the shore- lines of these bountiful
waters built the foundation of what has become a successful
tournament career for over a decade. Now as a husband
(to a very tolerant wife) and father
of two, Tim has chosen not to pursue bass fishing as a
full time "touring" professional but still maintains
an aggressive tournament schedule, fishing 20-30 team
and draw tournaments per year and attending 3-4 bass fishing
expos as well, in support of his sponsors. Tim has carved
a respectable name for himself as an individual in the
local bass fishing community and a genuine contender in
the many high profile regional and national tournament
trails in his area.
Introduced to competative bass fishing in the early 80's,
Tim quickly found a home in several area bass clubs including
Poor Boys Bass Club (PBBC). Tim became involved not only
in the competitive side of the sport but also the political
side as well. After two years as a member of PBBC, Tim
was elected club President where he quickly grew the club
to be the largest in the state with over 100 members.
PBBC joined the NC BASS State Federation, Northern Region
that year and became very involved with serving the local
community. Some of the activities Tim lead the club into
included hosting benefit tournaments for the Make-A-Wish
Foundation, assisting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
with their annual fish reef building project on Jordan
Lake, co-hosting the annual Kids Fishing Derby at Lake
Wheeler, and joining the NCWRC "Adopt-A-Ramp"
project that patrolled and cleaned a public boat ramp
twice a month. This effort awarded the club with several
special recognition honors, most notably the "Club
Of The Year, awarded by the NC BASS Federation.
After two consecutive PBBC "Angler of the Year"
championships and two "Team of the Year" titles
with long time friend Ralph Ray, Tim stepped away from
PBBC to pursue more challenging tournament events in his
area. High profile tournament trails such as the Tarheel
Team Tournaments, Fishers of Men Trail, RedMan, Bassin'
America as well as others put him in competition with
some of todays top pros such as David Fritz, Randy Howell,
Gerald Beck and many other great anglers from the North
Carolina region.
Although considered a versatile fisherman, Tim's strength
is his ability to find and catch bass offshore on the
many humps, ridges and other hidden structure found only
by use of a good map and a depth finder. Tim favors large
crankbaits like the Poe's 400 and Jerry Lohr's "Big
Jerry" or when conditions dictate, a Dave's 3/4 oz.
Bug Eyed jig or 10.5" Baby Huey worm (fished Carolina
or Texas rigged).
Through Tim's individual success as an angler and in team
competitions with regular team tournament partner Lenny
Fulton, he has attracted the attention of several tackle
and equipment manufacturers such as Dave's
Tournament Tackle, to represent them as a pro staff member.
Tim has also been featured in several magazine articles
published in "North Carolina Game & Fish"
and "North Carolina Sportsman", sharing information
and experiences to help other anglers improve their bass
fishing skills.
Whether it's on the water or at a trade show, Tim is always
ready to meet new people or greet old friends with a smile
and a handshake, just like his grandfather taught him
over 30 years ago. And of course, he is always willing
to share a fish story! |
