• Basic Fishing Rod Selection for Beginners

    Fishing Rods

Shimano, Daiwa, Bass pro shops, the rod manufactures are endless. So how do you pick the right rod for you, the consumer?  Here is the biggest key to rod buying, “Get something that is comfortable for you, the individual“.  Just because Kevin Van Dam uses a certain manufacture’s rods doesn’t mean that those rods will work for you.  It basically comes down to experimentation and finding out what’s comfortable in your hands.

  • Equipment Check

    Fishing Equipment

One of the most important features of successful bass fishing is having clean, fully functional fishing tackle and equipment.

Let’s begin with rods and reels. These are your most expensive tools and need to be maintained regularly especially when demanding total performance.

All line guides should be checked with a Q-tip gently twisted inside each eye. If the cotton wool catches on any of the inner rings, they should be replaced as they could cut your line at a crucial point during fish retrieval.

    First Impressions:

A great looking rod, a soft green color, and a great looking cork on the handle.  The TAC inlay set off nicely from the fine grain cork.  The split grip was clean looking and not too space age.  The handle fit my hand offering me a full hand feel.  It balanced nicely with the reel I used.  A quick flex with the tip on the floor presented the J form curve I expect and prefer from a fast action rod.

The first thing I noticed about this rod when I pulled it out of the shipping tube was the green color with gold lettering that really made the rod “pop” in the sunlight.. .But there is more to this rod than just its good looks.

I like the feel of the rod but it felt a little heavy. It took some thought as to what application I was going to use for this rod.

    First Impressions:

First thing you notice about the HMG GS66MH-F is its appearance. The rod has a black epoxy coated blank and the wrapping on the guides are black with gold tips, which goes nicely with the gold lettering on the blank. The grip is very interesting; it is what Fenwick calls TAC, which stands for technically advanced construction. It is designed for the angler to have better grip during wet conditions so it’s a different material then traditional cork.

    First Impressions:

I thought the blank looked sharp, a nice deep rich color with a glossy finish.  The reel seat and handle seemed a bit odd, like someone couldn’t make up their mind to commit to a split grip or keep it a full grip.  The handle color and grainy appearance put me off a little.  Even though it’s not cork but a material called TAC, it looked like the grainy cork handles of cheap 1960’s solid fiberglass rods.

My first impression of this rod was pretty much same as the 7’ HMG Triggerstik, at first it seemed a little heavy.  I absolutely love the classic look of the whole HMG line of rods, but it’s not how a rod looks, it’s how it performs.  This rod performs!

My first impression of the HMG 7 footer when I pulled it from the tube, was it felt a bit heavier than most of the rods I have been using.  But it does not have a spit grip handle which adds a few ounces to the rod.  I did notice however, the rod felt well balanced in my hand and the overall appearance and feel was very good.

  • The Right Bass Fishing Rod & Reel

    Rod and Reel Basics

Choosing the right equipment doesn’t have to be that complicated. I will give you as much information on the three basic setups I think will give you a good start without costing you a fortune. I would suggest going with two bait casters and one spinning rig. In the past I would recommend going to a dedicated sporting goods store to get what you need, but now most retail stores are carrying a good selection of quality rods and reels. In my area, Walmart is now carrying brands like Diawa, Abu Garcia, Falcon, Wright and McGill and Quantum.
