I see a couple of companies that have floating snake lures.Me being new and all see this and think it would work great.I live in south carolina and there are alot of snakes around when it is warm.Thanx for any help and this forum is the best

I have tried them, and they do work at times. They are fun to use because you'll get some intense strikes on the surface when bass are on the prowl. I found that they work really well around partially submerged trees. Snakes like to sun themselves in trees and occasionally one falls in the water, same as other small critters... certainly worth exploring.

Back in the late 80's burke put out the floating snake heads and of course i had to try them.They were nothing more than a piece of styrofoam you ran your line through before you tied to your hook,texas rig your favorite worm and you've got a snake. I found them to be a good choice in the early morning just before sun up.I like the doug hannon snakes,i haven't tried the others but i'm sure they'll work just as well.Here's a link to doug's website Natural Motion Lures

I really like the Mann's Snake Lure. I use it both on the surface and Texas rigged as well. Works both ways. I prefer the Black/neon-good color. There aren't many days in Iowa that top-waters work great, but when it happens, the Snake is on my line and I always have one Texas rigged for flippin' heavy cover. Caught two over six in October and several smaller ones of course. It was the last lure I used until the water froze solid. Good luck, JOhnnie

When fishing snake lures do you have to pause for a sec to let the fish get a good bite or as soon as you see it hit you set the hook????thanx for the help

Here's where you have to find that "happy medium".I've been seriously fishing since 1980 and have not only lost but witnessed others losing monster bass due to a poorly timed hookset.Too fast and you pull the lure from their mouth too slow and you run the risk of the fish spitting the bait.Power worms have given fishermen an extra second or two to set the hook so i'd recommend using them to increase hook ups while you hone your worming skills.the 3 things that IMO are most important to mastering the worm are:
#1 Focus - Learn to become a line watcher.Watching your line on the drop for the slightest of hits will often reward you with BIG bass.
#2 Discipline - this applies to topwater fishing also. Train yourself to resist the urge to set the hook too soon.A 1/1000 count can be used as a starting point but you really need to find your own rhythm here.
#3 Confidence - Believe in the lure,your presentation and location. Fish a spot slowly and thoroughly. Good Luck

Thanx for the help.I think i maybe missing some strikes because i am watching my tip instead of the feel thing you are talking about.I have a 6' berkley mh action i tried a 6 and ahalf but seemed to be setting the hook to late.I cant wait till it warms up i want to fish top water lures.

MbBass A good rule of thunb-when surface fishing wait until you feel the weight of the fish on your rod before setting the hook.
On bottom baits, I usually let the fish move with the bait before I set-sometimes when I think I've been bit and nothing moves, I set the hook anyway. Gently raise your rod tip and if anything but air is there set the hook. Good luck, Johnnie
