Do any of you guys fish a sammy topwater bait? I heard that they really produce, but at $15 a copy I want to hear input from more than one person. The 115 model is the one that I heard the good input on. The topwater bite has declined in WI, but I am hopeful that a 115 will re-activate it. My personal thought is the bass have seen just too many chugbugs, pop R's, and skitter pops. What's so good about the sammy from lucky craft?

Hi Butch,

Yeah, the Sammy is no joke... One of my fishing partners (Dan McGarry) turned me onto the Sammy a couple of years ago and they really are something special...

Are they worth the money??? I would have to say that they are. Lucky Craft has really gotten down the method of "tuning" a bait. I have yet to buy one that didn't work perfectly right out of the package. That's a big plus when you consider how many other baits you buy and end up leaving in your box because you can't make them run true.

They are very easy to make "walk the dog" and because the bait is more stream-lined, they have a much more natural appearance from some of the other top water baits that are typically used (i.e. Zara Spook, etc.).

The other thing that stands out about these baits is the shape. I read alot about Bass forage and what types of forage Bass prefer to feed on, if given the choice. You'll almost always find Bass feeding on the long and thin bait fish, like Alewife over the short fat brim & blue gills:

The Sammy does a pretty good job of imitating these bait fish and when you let them sit still, it increases your chances for getting a "motionless" strike on a top water, especially if alewife are present in that body of water.

I hope this helps to answer your question about the Sammy...

Brendan: Do find any size sammie more productive than another? I know that the forage size of bait fish is the key. Just wanted to see if you have better results with a certain size sammie.

Personally, I like the 4" it runs a bit better than the 4 1/2". They both work very well though...

Butch,
the Sammy is one of the best Topwater zara style baits I have ever used. All "Lucky Craft Lures are well balanced and will bive you problems if you change hooks or bang them up so take care of them. I love the "Pointer 78" as a jerk bait. Two other topwaters you may want to consider are the "Yellow Tail" and the "Rico" both are fish catching poppers. Good luck spend the 15 bucks they are worth it!!! Dan Bass
