Luke, by "swirly" I am assuming you mean that it is loose on the reel or comes off in "loops" when you cast. Which type of reel are you having this problem with? For a baitcasting reel, make sure the line goes on the reel opposite of how it comes off the spool, kind of like a chain on a bycycle, for the spinning reels, lay the spool on the floor and turn the reel handle a few turns, if it loops up before going on the reel, turn the spool over and see how that works.
