GE's opposition to the EPA's decision to dredge the upper Hudson river. Read this: http://www.hudsonvoice.com/ Looking for some input on this matter. GE seems to back their statement with a lot of facts. EPA Over-reaction Leads to Unfounded Public Fears An Oct. 19 opinion column in The Wall Street Journal today takes EPA to task for over-reacting in its handling of some environmental issues such as asbestos and PCBs. The column notes that such action often promotes public fears that have no basis in scientific fact. To read the article, please click here http://www.hudsonvoice.com/. Update on PCBs and human health GE has completed a summary of the most recent research on PCB exposure and human health. The conclusion: more than 100 human health studies have found no evidence that PCBs cause cancer or other serious illnesses in people. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulates PCBs as "probable human carcinogens" based on studies in which rats were fed very high doses of PCBs in their diets. To date, EPA has not revised its regulation of PCBs to incorporate the vast human health data. Click here http://www.hudsonvoice.com/ to read the report. GE Statement on Hudson River FAIRFIELD, Conn. - August 1, 2001 -The General Electric Company today issued the following statement concerning EPA's decision to proceed with dredging of the Upper Hudson River: "GE is disappointed in the EPA's decision to undertake a massive dredging project of the Upper Hudson River, which will cause more harm than good. "This is a loss for the people of the area who overwhelmingly oppose this project and the decades of disruption it will bring to their communities. It appears that neither sound science nor the voices of these residents played a part in the EPA's decision. "GE has invested $200 million in Hudson River research and restoration projects over the past 20 years and has met every commitment made to state and federal regulators. This had led to remarkable improvement in the river during this period. "GE calls on the EPA to make public its draft decision so that GE, local river residents and all impacted parties can review the plan and participate in the process." Rep. Sweeney and New York State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno oppose EPA’s dredging plan Click here http://www.hudsonvoice.com/ to read their statements 50,000 and Counting Postcards, E-mails and Telegrams Against Dredging Pour Into EPA EPA has now received more than 50,000 postcards, petitions, e-mails and telegrams from people opposed to the massive and destructive Upper Hudson River dredging project it has proposed. More than 60 local communities have opposed dredging, and local newspaper polls show the public opposes dredging 2 to 1.

And if the Hudson isn't enough... They are dredging Greenwood lake on the N.J. side...
This bill would appropriate $2.5 million from the General Fund to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to pay for the first phase of an approximately $5 million to $7 million project to dredge the New Jersey portion of Greenwood Lake in Passaic county. The dredging funded by this bill shall be done in accordance with the study and plan developed by the Greenwood Lake Watershed Management District for the rehabilitation of the lake. The DEP shall consult and cooperate with the Greenwood Lake Watershed Management District, the Township of West Milford, and Passaic county on the dredging project funded by this bill. If deemed useful or expedient, the DEP may transfer all or a portion of the monies appropriated pursuant to this bill to the Greenwood Lake Watershed Management District, the Township of West Milford, or Passaic county in the form of a grant to pay for the dredging of the lake.
Greenwood Lake is a vital Highlands area water and recreational resource located in New Jersey and New York. Parts of the lake are in the middle stages of eutrophication and silting due to nonpoint source pollution. These impacts have increased due to the conversion of many seasonal houses in the area to year-round residences. The southern end of the lake in New Jersey is particularly laden with accumulated sediment, which severely reduces the lake's total water holding capacity and interferes with recreational use by encouraging weed proliferation. Dredging would be an environmentally sound and effective solution that could increase the volume of stored water available for downstream reservoirs as well as address many other problems faced by the lake.

I know I've asked this like 3 times already, but did anyone read the post up top about them dredging Greenwood lake and the Hudson river (Besides Dave)?
From what they are saying (EPA) it could really mess the fishing up BAD!!! People are protesting it already...
Any thoughts?

New Wave... I like a chat room to for stuff like this... Makes everything go faster... We do have plans to add one to the site...
We started out with message boards and they work well for longer term Q & A... I'm still looking for a good chat program, before I'll add it to the site...

Fine Bango sounds good. Heres a good question. when winter hits and the dissoled oxygen drops in a lake due to low light penetration threw the ice do you feel bass will dare the colder water, and follow the panfish for more food and comfort or will they just hunker down and wait until turnover starts and they feel the water warming up. this question has come up during ice fishing demonstrations that I have done.

Any thoughts? If they want to mess things up then why don't they lay out the money for a new Hudson River and Greenwood Lake to move the fish into before screwing things up - since we caused the problem not the bass we should find a way to fix it without messing things up for our little buddies in the water...

Dave... Interesting question... I really never looked into it... I would imagine that if the water is comfortable enough for the panfish, then it wouldn't bother the bass all that much either... If there is no other food available, one would think they would have to follow the food... even in winter... Originally posted by Lunker Dave: Fine Bango sounds good. Unfortunately when a dredging happens they may be stirring up more then they bargen for. True it will remove some of the toxins, but it will also send them suspending in the water to find a new destination to settle. so in tern you may have less pollution over a larger area. its a double edge sword from my perspective. There are certain bacteria that can breakdown pcbs whitch has been discussed in my lab class, but what happens when they exhaust their supply or what are the enviornmental consequences by introducing a new organism to a eco-system that may not be optimal.

Yes I feel the same way. I will actually move my tip-ups shallower during late winter, and will have much sucess. Now shallower may mean bringing them up in the water column, and not necessarly moving them into 3 feet of total depth.

Dave I haven't even seen enough ice to "ice fish" on yet this year... and the bass are still moving around pretty actively...
You might want to try going to Fresh Pond in North Port this weekend if you are looking for some action...

Take care Dave... We are going to rap this up... we have to keep experimenting with days and times to find out what night is good for everyone... But that doesn't mean you can't stop in to talk anytime...
Later...

Joe... I'm only going to let them go if someone I know is looking... I can't afford to take a chance of getting stuck with out a boat... Originally posted by Joe C.: Funny I didn't see either boat in the eclassifieds section - that may have sparked some interest???
