The new side imaging sonars are just what they say they are. I have used one all year and they are impressive. You'll find weedlines, trees, rocks, logs and other structure you never knew existed. They have found, cars, airplanes and missing bodies with these units. You can actually see what's down there. Luckily, all I've found is fish and cover and what I think is a mattress (for bedding bass maybe???). Johnnie

I'm going to have to look into getting one of these units.I've been using an OLD bottom line sidefinder for years,shows fish only,no matresses. Come to think of it maybe i'll stick with the old unit,i'm not so sure i wanna see EVERYTHING that may be down there \:D

I did get my boat back this weekend with the 997 installed, the trouble is all the lakes froze up this weekend too!

I am going to be getting one at the end of Feb. I can’t wait. I have looked at every picture I can find on the internet of the shots that folks have taken with their units. I can’t believe some of the shots that were taken and what you can learn from this unit.

Think about it being able to just ride around, see something that you want to check out, mark it with GPS, turn around and fish it! I guess it the water is clear enough you could even drop down one of the cameras (Aqua View) and see what it actually looks like. From the images I’ve seen you don’t even need the camera because you can take a side image from different angles and have the picture in your mind.

I think that Peter “T” used it in his Memorial Victory. He idled around and marked every point and cut in the weed beds he was fishing and used that in route to his victory.

If you will send me a private message or if Brendan doesn’t mind I could give some of the links that I have been going too that has been a great help to me.

Matter fact if you guys that have the side imaging would post pictures it would be great!

I know that we have one heck of a deep water guide here in “TableRockGuide” Don House. I have heard nothing but great things about him, when it comes to deep water fishing.

Care to give us some lessons on using your electronics Don?

Anytime guys!! You just tell me what you are wanting to know about and I will open a discussion about it. Graph reading, mounting and setup, Si pictures, 2D pictures anything you guys want! I can't wait to get some new pictures for you guys spoonbill snagging season will produce some really cool pictures of these monsters via the SI unit!

Well I just ordered my new units for this seasons boat and have one more show to go in Indy then I can go back to fishing March 1, I start crappie fishing first then over to spoonbill snagging, and bass fishing in the mix of all. I can hear the grease cooking for those Crappie now!!

Anyone around Indy IN from Feb 15th - Feb 24th stop by the sport show and say hello I will be at the Grandt Rod Booth for 2 weeks.

Post any links you like that will help provide more info on with the Humminbird 997. As soon as I get my boat in the water (and learn how to use the unit) I will post some images too.

Don,

The most common thing I hear from people using the 997 is getting the settings dialed in. In your experience, how do you compare the settings for the 997 Side Imaging to let say a typical lowrance unit? What are the key factors that one needs to consider?

For example with a lowrance unit, adjustments to the sensitivity, ping speed, and transducer frequency are commonly needed to fine tune the unit for different situations.

What are the key system settings that people need to know about with the Humminbird 997 (specifically when using SI)?

That should get us all started talking!
