Hi every one,

It is time I told the story of my trip last week. I posted the pictures up but never told the story. I finally found myself the opprtunity to take three days off and do what I do best...Fish Fish Fish.
I was very excited to try the new fluorocarbon line Daiwa has just put out. It is spring time and I put the line to a real good test. I spooled the line on my Daiwa 2500 Capricorn reel. I used 8lb test Berkley XT as my backing. I practically spooled the entire 125 yds on my reel over the backing. The rod I was using was a St. Croix Premier 6 ft med light rod. The lake I chose to fish at was in Connecticut, it is a man made reservoir with a natural pond that was flooded. The water temperature ranged from 57 degrees in the morning to 61.5 in the afternoon. The water depth in the lake averages 20 ft. The deepest being 48 ft. The air temperature was low 50’s in the morning to upper 70’s in the afternoon. The weather was perfect for an April fishing trip. The fish were pre-pawn. When I fish pre spawn fish I prefer to us fluorocarbon. I like to use a line that is highly resistant to abrasion and one that offers a fast sink rate. I targeted small mouth bass. I fished a hard bottom with plenty of rock and gravel. It was important that what ever line I used was durable and abrasion resistant. I found the Daiwa line to be super soft and super strong. I was using 1/16oz finesse 3” tubes in natural colors. I also was throwing 1/16 oz hair jigs in black. I fished water mainly between 3 ft and 15 ft. The first day fishing I used this set up 80 percent of the day. That day I caught uncountable amounts of small mouth bass ranging from little 10” fish to hard fighting 3lb 2 oz fish. I continuously was pulling out 2 lb smallies from the rocks. During the day I had to re-tie about 10 times due to the abuse I put the line through. I did not lose 1 fish due to line failure. I had a three pound small mouth that after I set the hook went straight in between a patch of boulders. I was able work the fish out, while the line was in contact with the boulders and land the fish. That was day one.

Day 2 I was concerned I could not get a 4 lb bass the first day so wanted to try a different approach. I decided even know it was April to try and flip some docks. A buddy of mine (always keep an open mind) told me if I want bigger fish try flippin the docks. So off to the docks I went. It was the greatest advice. The wind was blowing 20 - 25 kts. Boat control and good casting was a key. Off almost every dock I caught a nice fat bass. I was throwing a 5/16 black and blue jig with a black/blue flake trailer. I spooled 12 lb xt on my 6.5 medium heavy flippin stick. My best fish that day were a 6 lb 10oz, 5lb 7 oz, 5 lb 2 oz and numerous high fours. I had to have 25 lbs for 5 fish. By far the best day I ever had. Look at the picture and see how deep she took that jig. It was an unbelievable day.

Day three the wind totally shut down. I tried the docks and no bass to be found. I went back to finesse fishing humps and rocks and had an outstanding day with the smallies. Day three my best 5 were 17.9 pds. Only 1 largemouth that was 3.6 pds. I did get a 3lb 15oz smallie. I caught mostly smallies this day and had the time of my life.

Thanks for letting me share everyone.

Tight Lines.

Nunz

Great report Nunz. Glad to see you were having some major fun out there with the bass.

OK..... now that I've stopped druling..... those are some awesome catches you were describing and the day ya had five that got over 25 well heck, that's tounament winning stats.

The LMB look great and the big boy smallies are impressive too.
Also the pics are real good too!!!

Just curious, which line weight of the new Daiwa flouro were you using with the spider jigs and finess tubes??

I'm gonna be making an attack at Castaic first thing tomorrow morning. I'm gonna be trying out some ultra light kamikaze setups for LMB with 3 lb. Maxima mono. Never done it that low before... could be dicey but maybe I'll get some good bites.

Good fishing to ya and thanks for all the good info.

Later............... geobass

Good fishing to ya, later............. geobass

Thanks Geo. The jigs I was using were 5/16. They are hand tied by a local over here. They have silicon skirts with hair under them. I was not using spider jigs. I was throwing that on 12lb berkly xt on my protogue bait caster. The first day when I was using the daiwa flouro I was throwing yamomota finese tubes. They were 3" with a 1/16 and 1/8 jig head. The flouro was 6lb test. I also threw 1/16 black and blue hair jigs. The most success was with the yamo tubes in green on day one and three. Slow dragging the tubes was the trick. The most fun was with the largies on day two for sure using the jigs. I use Maxima mono 4lb on my drop shot rod this time of the year. I used that too and had very much siccess. I was catching so many fish that it was getting fustrating have to retie the drop shot rig so many times.
